SALTON CITY — U.S.Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector arrested a sex offender over the weekend.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 3 p.m., when agents assigned to the Highway 86 Border Patrol Checkpoint encountered a man with an expired Employment Authorization Card. Agents arrested the man and ran his immigration and criminal history.
Agents conducted records checks, which identified the man as Carlos Ramon Cortes-Nieto a 37-year-old Honduran national. Cortes’s record checks also revealed that he is a registered sex offender. Cortes was convicted on April 11, 2018 for Voyeurism in King County, Washington. Cortes received two years probation and 2 days in jail for his crimes.
Cortes’s is being held in federal custody pending further immigration proceedings.
In fiscal year 2020, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents have arrested and removed 16 individuals either convicted or wanted on sexual assault charges after they entered the United States illegally.
